Abstract
Background: Menopause is a natural transition that affects quality of life, sexual function, and mood. Expert-led, peer-facilitated, or self-directed education interventions are shown to improve menopause-related outcomes. Peer education is as effective as expert-led groups while requiring fewer resources, fostering trust, and promoting behavioral changes. This project developed an evidence-based, pilot, peer support training program to enhance menopause awareness and attitudes among urban, diverse women in a community wellness center in response to community members seeking menopause information. Methods: This initiative used the Johns Hopkins Roadmap to Peer Support (JHRTPS) framework. The intervention trained peer supporters (PSs) using structured content on the role of a peer supporter and the online application, My Menoplan. Program effectiveness was evaluated using post-workshop surveys across three events, one informational session and two pilot training programs. 100% of participants would recommend the program to a friend. Program engagement was evaluated using intended and observed attendance at each event. A Chi Square Goodness of Fit test was used to determine significant difference between the expected (RSVP) and observed (actual attendance). Median participant knowledge scores of 4.5-5 regarding related to the peer supporter role indicated program effectiveness. Mean participant confidence scores were in the moderate range with mean scores ranging from 3.2-3.4 with SD 1.34-2.04 suggesting high variability of scores. This quality improvement project contributes to the evidence supporting peer-led health interventions.
