Wire-Based Core Field Effect Transistor (CoreFET) and Solid State Plasma Polymerization of Thiophene and Aniline Derivatives

Abstract
Conductive polymers have received much attention in recent years and extensive studies have been made on them. They have a high potential for a great variety of different applications as, for example, for field effect transistor (FET), antistatic coatings for electronic packaging, electrodes for organic LEDs and paper-based electronic devices. In the first part of this dissertation, a novel proof-of-concept FET design (CoreFET) based on a thin wire is introduced, which can be fabricated without any micromanufacturing processes. Poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) was used to develop thin film CoreFETs, in which the central core of a wire acts as a gate terminal. Silvaco ATLAS numerical simulation was used to study the performance of electrical characteristics of the CoreFET device. The effect of the thickness of the dielectric material and the gap between the source and drain electrodes on the current was also investigated. In the second part of the dissertation, a universal yet effective method of preparing conductive polymer films directly from the solid state using atmospheric plasma is described. The polymerization of solid state thiophene and aniline derivatives has been studied to confirm the effectiveness of the method. To understand the polymerization reaction in atmospheric plasma, the formation of polymers on substrates and the reaction mechanism were investigated with Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy. The kinetics of the polymerization reaction was investigated by using UV-vis spectroscopy. The DBD plasma nongaseous polymerization was used to prepare polythiophene inside a sheet of paper directly from solid state 2,2'-bithiophene. Three devices based on the synthesized conductive paper are presented.
