Abstract

Gastroenterology & Hepatology Life Sciences & Biomedicine Science & Technology
Mario Costantini was a pioneer in esophageal surgery whose impact extended far beyond technical innovation. Born on April 28, 1955, in Burano, a small island in the Venetian lagoon known for its colorful houses, he rose from humble beginnings to become one of the leading figures in esophageal surgery in Europe. He completed medical school at the University of Padova in 1980 and, following his surgical training there, remained at the institution throughout his career, helping to shape and expand its legacy as a leading center in foregut surgery. As he later reflected, “At the time, Padua was synonymous with the esophagus. I have never left that group in its different evolutions and ramifications.” [1st paragraph]
