Abstract
Each year, facing the decision whether to continue one's education, thousands of registered nurses return to college to pursue advanced degrees. Increasingly, many of these returning students are experienced advanced practice nurses (APRNs) pursuing the relatively new doctor of nursing practice degree, which is mostly known as the DNP, but also the DrNP. One observation we have made is that there has been no real movement to characterize or distinguish the advanced practice of these new doctorally prepared graduates from what has been traditionally termed “advanced practice nursing” with the presumption of a master's degree in nursing. Although the American Board of Comprehensive Care in 2008 introduced a new and controversial certification examination (intended to validate advanced clinical competency above the master's level) whereby some DNP graduates from practice tracks (graduates from clinical executive tracks or educator tracks are excluded) can be certified as Diplomates in Comprehensive Care (Landro, 2008; Mundinger, 2007; Stanik-Hutt, 2008), a discussion in the literature about how to properly redefine this new type of advanced nursing practice has been largely absent. We think it is very confusing to see the practice of doctorally prepared advanced practice nurses described as:
Advanced practice nursing (strangely doesn't indicate any difference from MSN practice).
Doctoral-level clinical nursing (seems somehow divorced from “advanced”).
Doctoral nursing practice (not precise enough and could mean the practice of any nurse with any type of doctorate).
Advanced advanced practice nursing (perhaps the oddest of all!).
