Lobster and crab shells could provide basis for new chemical sensor technology

Abstract
There are very limited means of rapidly identifying the presence of hazardous gas agents. Cross-linking chitosan polymer with hexamethylene 1,6-di(aminocarboxysulfonate) provides uniform film where the observed colors are due the thickness of layers and resulting index of refraction. Additional treatments to the system can effectively create a colorimetric sensor capable of identyfying trace chemical elements. The presence of a chemical agent bind to the chitosan films and result in a change in the film's color, which would be visible to the naked eye. Chitosan-based sensing technologies have the potential to become an innovative response to the ever-growing need for inexpensive and reliable chemical sensing monitors. The development of portable, zero- or low-power colorimetric sensors to identify potentially dangerours agents in the air and water would enable military personnel, and civilians alike, to react quickly to these types of threats.
