Abstract
Visualization is a powerful tool for unlocking the amazing power of the brain to unleash the vast reserves of creativity, gain and share insights. Project planning techniques have long been the primary tool for execution of large complex corporate initiatives. Data visualization has brought the ability for analysis and insight from big data to the forefront of management techniques. Although there is a plethora of information in the literature about each of these techniques and their application, to my knowledge, their integration and application to corporate transformation program execution has not been investigated. The integration of these three management tools is the focus of this case study. This paper servers to illustrate the value of the integration as applied, it is by no means a research document, rather it offers real world application and validation of the value from experience. This case study presents the application of data visualization, visual system mapping and project planning illustrating the power of integrating these engineering management theories and tools to manage complex programs, nurture collaboration, provide insights and execute for results. The use of visual system mapping, inspired by Tony and Barry Buzan's 1960's work on mind mapping originally developed to improve the use of the brain in note taking, learning, creativity and mastery is extended to project planning. In this case study, the mapping was then integrated with data collection and visualization of critical program milestones and intersections, visualizing it for insights and integrating it all into an overall program plan for scheduling, staffing, and execution. This was an experiential case study where the techniques were used iteratively and effectiveness was assessed based on application experience, observations and verbal feedback during, between and after each of the sessions. The integration of these techniques resulted in improved insights, better coordination of multiple complex programs, better staff planning, scheduling and execution. Each of these techniques is effective on its own. However, integration makes them vastly more powerful and compelling when applied together for project planning and other complex business transformation programs.
