Palliative care is referred to as a specialized medical care targeted at those with severe or life-threatening health conditions. It is mainly focused on relieving patient and family members from various symptoms, physically or emotionally, as well as improving the quality of life. Slightly behind the development of palliative care for adults, the palliative care movement for children has originated. Over the past two decades, there are an increasing number of palliative care organizations starting to serve children and young adults at their last stage of life. And music as an effective and creative approach has been more and more integrated into pediatric palliative care on a global scale. This capstone project is a critical review of the literature on music therapy and pediatric palliative care. More specifically, literature is reviewed to define palliative care and pediatric palliative care, to find how palliative care works for children, how music therapy can be integrated into this kind of care, what role the music therapists play, what some music therapy techniques are more adaptive and the significance of family involvement in music therapy in palliative care for children.
