Abstract

Dance therapy Movement therapy Indians of North America Physician and patient Arts--Therapeutic use
This culminating project acknowledges the history and resilience of Native people in America. It provides a brief overview of historical contexts, invisibility of accurate Native representation in literature and media, and indigenous ways of knowing. This broad look at factors influencing the patient/provider relationship for Native Americans seeking health care is done so to provide a generalized foundation which trusting relationships can potentially be established on. The article portion of this project offers suggestions that could be implemented moving forward to aid in establishing trust through the patient/provider relationship. It does so by displaying the patient/provider relationship as a kaleidoscope, reflective and multifaceted. The kaleidoscope uses Relational-Cultural theory as an approach, using reciprocal recognition, while simultaneously incorporating the systems impacting the individual and the collective.
