Abstract
The older adult population is a growing population that will continue to expand within the next few decades, and with this expansion, so too will the need for music therapy services to support this groups mental and physical health, and overall quality of life (Bureau, 2020). However, ageism, a near deadly societal form of oppression, threatens older adults' livelihoods and their access to quality healthcare. Ageism is present at the individual, structural and societal levels of interaction. Moreover, older adults who are part of oppressed and marginalized communities are more at risk for suffering the harms of ageism, as it compounds other forms of oppression. Ageism, however, is societal construct and it is possible to for this system to be deconstructed. This culminating project presents a literary analysis of ageism and it is impacts on older adults, as well as panel discussion that further expands upon the role of therapists in dismantling this form of oppression.
