Abstract
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic blood disorder, which affects millions of people all over the world but is more prevalent in the continent of Africa and the Indian subcontinent. Annually, 300,000 infants are born with SCD out of which more than 90% of them do not survive to adulthood in countries with poor resources. In India, SCD is found mostly in tribal communities where the illiteracy rate is 41%. Consanguineous marriages are very common in these communities, which are one of the main reasons for the propagation of this genetic blood disorder. On top of that, the low literacy rate makes people less aware about health and well-being. Audiovisuals are a powerful tool which can be used to convey information, even without the need to use technical jargon. Digital media has come a long way and is playing a big part in healthcare literacy. Generally, people have difficulty understanding medical explanation when they have low literacy. The use of different media like medical cinema, animation content, games have helped by increasing understanding in the illiterate population and also has increased the awareness amongst the people about different health conditions and help them identify different ways to cope with them. Studies have shown that the use of animated content using instructional design in health education has helped people with low health literacy to have better understanding of the medical content. This project develops an animated content using instructional design targeting SCD to be used by health professionals as a tool to educate and increase awareness about the disease. With the help of expert interviews the efficacy of the developed video was assessed. The results indicate a unanimous agreement amongst the medical professionals regarding the applicability of this animated video.
