Abstract

Intermodal Psychiatry Visual Arts
This paper documents an Informed Practice Approach, designed, developed, and facilitated at the author's internship placement. The approach is an arts-allied music therapy perspective, called ArtwoRx, which entails three distinct improvisatory techniques executed in various domains of inpatient psychiatry. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the viability in using the visual arts in music therapy to deepen musical engagement within psychiatric populations, and possibly beyond. Music Inspiring Art (MIA) is a prerecorded method in which participant's mindfully engage with commercial or client made music by responding creatively and improvisationally with visual media. Art Inspiring Music (AIM) is in essence the reverse, where clients respond to either commercial or client made art via musical improvisation. Lastly, Simultaneous Art and Music Improvisation (SAMI) entails what the name suggests, participants respond to and engage with audio and visual material live and in real time improvisationally This process can also be referred to as a Musical Mandala. The paper details inspirations for inquiry, salient literature and theory for both music and intermodal therapy, the aforementioned techniques as well as complimentary vignettes, and lastly, conclusions in implementation and practice.
