Abstract

Falls (Accidents)--Prevention Teams in the workplace--Communication systems
A patient fall has become a targeted event that hospitals across the country are trying to prevent by implementing new, evidence-based strategies and techniques. Falls with injuries are considered as "never occur events" by the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services. For patients with cancer, falls can cause significant morbidity and mortality. The purpose of this project is to implement a tool to enhance communication between licensed staff regarding fall prevention measures during bedside shift report. It is important that nurse leaders provide licensed staff with the appropriate nursing interventions to identify and reduce a patient's underlying fall risk factors and to prevent secondary injury to a patient who has fallen. Implementing these interventions should reduce healthcare costs by reducing inpatient falls and also, improve patient satisfaction with the healthcare system, communication among the interdisciplinary team, and health outcomes for the patients.
