Although much is known about networking in the for profit sector and the nonprofit sector in general, little is known specifically about how arts and culture organizations and artists network and the most effective ways in which networking can be used by the arts. By looking at how arts organizations and artists network and understanding some best practices for networking in a formal context, the efficacy for how networking is used in the arts sector has the potential to be improved. Using qualitative data, this study examines several arts and artist network organizations (umbrella organizations) to illustrate how networking functions among them in a formal context, and to understand the best practices for artists and arts organizations to network. Specifically, four arts networking (umbrella) organizations within Philadelphia are examined via secondary data, such as Web sites, annual reports, and organizational publications, as well as primary data in the form of interviews with key staff people within the organizations along with several members, to study the characteristics each organization has and what common elements are exhibited within these organizations. The umbrella organizations studied provide a wide array of ways in which members can network and have proven to be benchmark networking organizations based on the networking services they offer and the success with which members interviewed for this study have used these services. Nevertheless, members themselves need to be self-motivated to take advantage of the services offered. Additionally, both networking and member organizations could further look into tracking their own networks to improve upon the use of networking. A quantitative study of the networking organizations studied herein, as well as expanding the study to international locations would be useful to further understand how networking is used.
