Abstract

Neurologic music therapy Caregivers Dementia
Dementia is an incurable disease that is one of the main causes of death for older adults over the age of 65. It is unknown how the different types of dementia are developed, but there are many studies that analyze the effects of stress and how it may correlate with Dementia. Caregivers often experience an immense amount of stress and are affected socially, emotionally, mentally, physically and financially. This can lead to a lower quality of life and can also negatively affect the relationship with the person with dementia as the disease progresses. Several types of support services are offered, but many are not accessible for minoritized communities living within the United States. Music therapy is one of the services available for caregivers and people with Dementia to help with individualized goals to fit each client's needs. Neurologic Music therapy is found to be effective for people with dementia in individual and group settings, but it has limited research in caregiver involvements. This paper investigates and proposes ideas for how Neurologic Music Therapy groups can address cognitive, speech, and psychomotor goals while enhancing social and relational needs for people with Dementia and their caregivers.
