Abstract

Multiplying Connections Initiative Pennsylvania--Philadelphia Children's Services Outcomes Public Health
Adverse experiences during childhood can affect the growth and chemistry of the brain and inhibit its natural development. Recent research shows that these experiences can result in poor health, development, performance, and behavior in childhood. Unless these adverse experiences are adequately prevented and addressed to minimize harmful consequences, their negative effects can last from childhood into adulthood. The Multiplying Connections Initiative has provided resources, training, and guidance on this topic for the past three years. At this critical juncture, an evaluation of the Initiative's progress and outcomes, as well as establishing a framework for future efforts, must be performed. The focus of this research is to collect data and provide recommendations that will allow Multiplying Connections to assess the outcomes of children in the five to ten year timeframe. To accomplish this, 1) a literature review was performed to find reliable indicators and 2) interviews were conducted with key agency representatives to determine what data is currently collected. It is recommended that consistent indicators in the following four domains be tracked across the systems for comparison: Child Well-Being, Family Support, Personal & Social Development, and School Readiness & Performance. The collection and comparison of the cross-systems indicators within these domains over time will allow for a more reliable analysis of child outcomes over the 5 to 10 year post-grant period for Multiplying Connections.
