Abstract

Mixed reality Quilted plants Stress (Psychology)--Prevention Augmented Reality Mental Health
This research investigates the potential of a tactile mixed reality (MR) interface, embodied in a quilted plant design, for stress alleviation. The global Covid pandemic's lockdowns severely impacted mental and physical health, primarily through social isolation, thereby escalating stress levels. Recognizing that both natural and artificial plants can mitigate stress, this study explores combining the tactile comfort of quilted plants with an interactive MR application. The aim is to provide a stress-reducing experience in scenarios akin to pandemic lockdowns. The quilted plant's design is inspired by heartstring lilies and Pothos, while the accompanying App features various nature-based effects, supplemented with one synthetic and one supernatural based effects to gauge user preferences. Two experiments were conducted: one surveyed users about their interaction with the plant, and the other incorporated the MR app. Although participants were not keen on regular usage, they acknowledged the concept's potential for stress reduction. The second experiment generated valuable feedback and inquiries, pointing towards future enhancements with more resources and development time. This project underscores the promise of integrating tactile experiences with MR technology for mental well-being.
