Abstract
Neuromuscular Junction Nurse Anesthetists--education Transcutaneous Electric Nerve Stimulation--methods
The use of neuromuscular blocking agents in the operating room is common. A peripheral nerve stimulator (PNS) is often used to monitor neuromuscular function following the administration of neuromuscular blocking agents. This study employed a questionnaire to investigate whether knowledge deficits exist among practitioners in the use of PNS. The study focused on the technical, physiological, and pathophysiological implications of neuromuscular assessment. The study evaluated the degrees of understanding among three groups of anesthesia providers: nurse anesthesia students (NAS), CRNA's, and anesthesiologists. NAS knew significantly more about the technical aspects of PNS than either CRNAs or anesthesiologists and significantly less about pathophysiological aspects than the other two groups. Inservice attendance did not significantly effect knowledge levels. Knowledge of pathophysiological and technical aspects of PNS were significant related to years of experience. Greater experience had a negative association with technical knowledge and a positive association with pathophysiological knowledge.
