Abstract

Pennsylvania Cancer Education Network Cancer--Study and teaching Certification PCEN Public Health
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in Pennsylvania, and while many cancers can be detected early through screening and successfully treated in timely manner. Cancer screening rates in Pennsylvania continue to be low. The Pennsylvania Cancer Education Network (PCEN) was established by the Pennsylvania Department of Health in 2005 to disseminate high quality, accurate and current information about cancer prevention and screening. PCEN health educators conduct presentations ranging from brief 20-minute lectures to expanded seminars addressing skin, prostate, colorectal and/or ovarian cancers. In a study of implementation fidelity, mandatory session components were included in 80% of sessions. In response to this finding, the Pennsylvania Department of Health decided to develop a formal training and certification procedure for PCEN health educators, and a training manual was developed in collaboration with the evaluation team at Drexel University. This project: (1) uses the training manual and a literature review of cancer health educator training to develop a training presentation and certification examination for PCEN health educators; (2) conducts a concept-test of the training presentation and certification examination; and (3) revises the training and certification procedures based on the results of concept-testing. The training and certification methods developed and concept-tested in this project will be utilized to increase implementation fidelity in PCEN, and may have broader application to other public health efforts involving health educators.
