Abstract

Design Information Technology Management Information Systems
The goal of this thesis project is to increase access to academically rigorous research by providing tools to promote information literacy. In order to do this, the present thesis has two objectives: the first is to better understand the landscape of information source usage, and the second is to design solutions to increase access to high-quality, academically rigorous information in a digestible way. Through surveys and literature review, this thesis aims to explore what sources are most utilized, what are common perceptions of these sources in terms of accessibility and utility, and to see if perceived accessibility and utility correlate with information source use. Understanding current information source usage is key to finding new ways to disseminate academically rigorous information because knowing this problem area makes it easier to identify which strategies would work best for research dissemination design. Utilizing in-depth interviews with professors, librarians, researchers, and students, this project then aims to illuminate additional areas of the research generation and dissemination process, where access can be improved, and where potential directions for design solutions could be. The thesis closes with a design for a "synthesis page" which combines findings from the literature review, interviews, and surveys to create an extension that can teach the user how to understand the different parts of an academic article while creating a central place with resources pertaining to the topics within the article. The goal of the page is to provide a method for reorganizing the way academic research is communicated digitally in order to improve access and understanding.
