Arts--Management Arts and culture organizations Efficiency Lean Process improvement Six sigma (Quality control standard) Sustainability
This study investigates the use of Lean and Six Sigma methodologies within arts and culture organizations (ACOs) to address operational inefficiencies. It finds that while none of the arts administrators in my sample deliberately applied these methods, their intuitive problem-solving inadvertently led them to employ some sections of the Lean and Six Sigma methodologies. Despite expressing concerns over the applicability and cost of Lean and Six Sigma, administrators demonstrated overwhelming interest in exploring them. However, the cultural behaviors exhibited by the administrators reveal a balance between support for and opposition to Lean and Six Sigma that pose significant challenges to adopting these methodologies in the sector. This study recommends a programmatic model that foundations and advocacy groups should use to promote operational excellence. The proposed programs should support and incentivize ACOs to implement process improvement methodologies, thereby fostering a more sustainable sector over time.
