Dance therapy Movement therapy Self-help groups Positive psychology
The therapeutic group process has potential to be a rewarding and healing experience for participants. Yet, how do we know when group members walk away with a positive experience? How does one engage in an optimal experience and achieve well-being? Moreover, as dance/movement therapists, how do we know if or when we have established positive outcomes of our group engagement? Through a critical examination and review of the literature, this culminating project sought to address these questions and explore the dynamics of group engagement within the framework of dance/movement therapy, under the lens of positive psychology. Beginning with an introduction of the personal interest of this writer, this project explored research and theoretical perspectives from positive psychology and dance/movement therapy, identified intersections and gaps, and synthesized new ideas of how to create an optimal experience in group dance/movement therapy. This project includes a reflection of personal bias and limitations, followed by a conclusion of the learning experience of this writer and her experience dancing with the creation of this project.
