Abstract

Dance therapy Cerebral palsied children
The purpose of this capstone project is to develop a dance/movement therapy method that encourages freedom of expression for children with cerebral palsy. "Finding freedom" encourages movement, extension, and relaxation for clients with severe cerebral palsy who do not often have the opportunity to express themselves through movement outside of their wheelchair. The method involves creating safety through the therapist offering both physical and emotional supports before transferring a student from a wheelchair to the floor. Once on the floor, the therapist supports exploration and expression of movement through mirroring, breathing, and attunement. This method developed organically and was introduced after the therapist and the client developed a therapeutic relationship based on comfort, trust, and understanding.
