The purpose of this study is to provide a strong argument for the ways in which classical ballet companies use social media to further their missions, and the benefits reaped from using such methods. This study looks at social media content of the Pennsylvania Ballet and Oregon Ballet Theatre through Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. Both companies utilize online social communications to engage audience members, but have yet to develop any solid plans or thorough evaluations of their efforts. These case studies prove the importance of understanding the online audience, diversifying social media content, and planning and evaluation of social media communications.
