Abstract

Arts--Management Arts--Study and teaching Nonprofit Organizations
Through creative arts partnerships, arts and culture nonprofit organizations have shouldered the financial, pedagogical, and administrative responsibilities required to teach the arts in schools following the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. In-school instrumental music partnerships in particular require deep administrative planning to run successfully. The purpose of this study was to find out success factors for administrating in-school instrumental music partnerships. This phenomenological study consisted of semi-structured interviews with five seasoned arts administrators in the city of Philadelphia who managed partnerships for music nonprofit organizations throughout their careers. This study identified five success factors for partnership success: understanding the school, setting realistic partnership goals, securing funding and supplies, building and maintaining relationships amongst stakeholders, and sustainability. This thesis argues that the first four success factors intersect, leading to and impacting sustainability, when a partnership exists in a community for several years or longer. Arts administrators should aspire to sustainability when working on partnerships so students have access to arts education for many years to come.
