Abstract

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) Cognitive bias Older adults
Older adults living with HIV in the United States experience widespread prejudice, discrimination, and other forms of stigma. This critical review aims to address this increasing issue by integrating the literature on stigma towards older adults living with HIV in the US. This review demonstrates that HIV stigma persistently affects the physical and mental health of older adults living with HIV. HIV stigma operates at multiple levels to impact health. Better comprehension of cognitive biases hold promise for reducing stigma and its adverse health-related effects on older adults living with HIV. Additional research is needed to document the causal relationship between stigma surrounding older adults living with HIV and stigma interventions based on cognitive biases. Multilevel interventions to prevent stigma towards older adults living with HIV are warranted.
