Abstract
Developing a critical review of the existing literature regarding the relationship between music therapy and its influence in Hispanic communities throughout the greater Philadelphia area represents the main focus of this project. Taking into account the vast and rich history of immigration of different Hispanic communities coming to this city, it is important to consider the multiple struggles these families face when first arriving in this country and trying to make sense of this reality. Focusing on the four main elements of Berry's model of acculturation theory, this literature review will enhance the concept of social identity and sense of belonging when developing a sense of community for these immigrant families when arriving in a new country. Exploring the presence of creativity in the overall psychological health of these individuals suggests the existence of creative alternatives for self-care and self-expression, and studying the influence of community-based music therapy groups with a multicultural approach in mind enhances people's culture of origin while also allowing for the acculturation process to a new country to be more manageable.
