Refugee camps Quality of Life Sustainability Sustainable Development
During the last ten years, we have witnessed the consequences of climate change and political conflicts. In addition, we are at times where natural disasters are more continuous and aggressive. This has an even worse effect on displaced persons who do not have the proper settlement and the resources to be resilient when a natural or man-made disaster hits. Even though the refugee camps are believed to represent a safe haven, their quality of life compared to those living outside the camp is much lower. Studies have found that the average years of a displaced person living in refugee camps is 3.5 years. The longer they stay, the more dependent the residents become on the camp, which in turn lowers their capabilities and the possibility of finding a home outside the camp in the future. The lack of tools provided in the refugee camps and a lowered quality of life are some of the main barriers for the refugees to seek a life outside the camp. The material living conditions, such as clean water, healthier materials, and sustainable settlement, affect refugee life satisfaction, capabilities, and life skills. In order to help them settle outside the camp, we must provide a healthier environment. Understanding the needs of the refugees and analyzing the policy in place will allow us to develop a better approach to the material living conditions in the refugee camps, which will reduce daily stressors that will create a safer "safe haven" where they can have the time and energy to plan a life outside the camp. This research aims to identify the possibility of delivering a new approach and best practices in refugee camps. It looks to prove that using healthier alternatives within the camp will reduce waste, but we are also reducing costs. Most importantly, we are improving the quality of life. As time changes, in the same way, institutions, communities, and governments must prepare better tools to respond to the needs of the refugees and prevent unleashing other disasters. Creating guidelines for designers and policymakers to transition to a healthier environment will improve the quality of life through material living conditions. This healthier settlement will enhance life satisfaction, capabilities, and life skills that will continue outside the camp.
