Abstract

Philadelphia Ujima Public Health Sex Education
Although most Americans agree with sex education being taught in schools, in Pennsylvania, schools are not required to teach sexual education. This is a possible factor that contributes to the high number of diagnosed cases of Chlamydia and Gonorrhea (371 and 102 cases, respectively), and the high number of reported AIDS cases among adolescents ages 13-19 in the state of Pennsylvania. A sexual health and healthy relationships curriculum that includes practical skills to prevent STDs, HIV and unintended pregnancies is of urgent need. This mixed methods research study consisted of three phases: (1) a literature review, (2) key informant interviews, and (3) a curricula review. Each phase informed the next phase; for instance, the literature review informed what questions to ask key informants; the key informant interviews helped to identify the key priority areas, topics, and issues that should be addressed in sexual health and healthy relationships curricula for adolescent girls; and the curricula review entailed the identification and analysis of existing evidence-based curricula and strategies based on what was found from both the literature review and key informant interviews. Analysis of the key informant interview narratives highlighted 14 key themes regarding adolescents' sexual health and relationships. The curricula analysis identified seven sexual health curricula and strategies that address concepts and topics identified by key informants. The curricula review also informed about the gaps in the existing sexual health education curricula. The findings imply that sexual health education should be practical, culturally relevant, and easy to implement.
