BIPOC Black LGBTQIA+ Black youth LGBTQIA+ Youth African American Studies
This study explores the experiences of Black queer youth raised in the South, where systemic barriers and societal norms often hinder access to spaces that affirm their intersecting identities. Drawing on the idea of intersectionality, it examines the marginalization faced within both Black and queer communities, highlighting the necessity of spaces designed specifically for their needs. The research also investigates how Black queer youth have reclaimed agency through creative practices and unexpected means, with a focus on arts education as a tool for fostering self-expression, community building, and resilience. This study aims to illuminate the transformative potential of art in cultivating safe and empowering spaces for Black queer youth, especially those who do not have the means to move to more accepting places. Additionally, this study seeks to explore how the arts and culture sector can contribute to the creation of positive and affirming experiences for Black queer youth within their home communities.
