Abstract
This thesis explores the innovative use of serious games for addressing microaggressions through Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) training. Traditional DEI training methods often suffer from passive engagement and short-term impact. The central question addressed is how serious games can enhance DEI training by providing an immersive and interactive learning experience. Previous research has shown the potential of serious games in education, but their application in DEI training remains underexplored. This study aims to fill this gap by introducing "Path to Understanding," a serious game designed to foster empathy and promote inclusive behaviors. The research is primarily literature-based, involving an extensive review to understand the current state of DEI training, the impact of microaggressions, and the potential of serious games as educational tools. Theoretical frameworks such as Experiential Learning, Constructivist Learning, Game-Based Learning, and Empathy Development guided the game's conceptual development. The game content was developed with input from a thesis advisor and a committee member with expertise in DEI content, ensuring educational relevance and accuracy. The game, featuring a realistic healthcare scenario, was developed using Unity. The study discusses the theoretical effectiveness of the game based on existing literature and conceptual frameworks. The findings suggest that serious games have the potential to enhance engagement, foster empathy, and promote long-term behavioral change, making them a promising tool for DEI training. This thesis contributes to the field by presenting a comprehensive framework for developing educational games aimed at reducing microaggressions and introduces a demo that exemplifies this approach. By addressing the limitations of traditional DEI methods and offering a practical and interactive learning experience, serious games like "Path to Understanding" can significantly advance DEI education and promote meaningful and lasting change.
