Post-concussion syndrome Brain--Wounds and injuries Neuropsychology
The current study aims to determine whether an overarching construct, emotional intelligence (EI), is a deficit in mild-moderate TBI compared to a healthy population. Further, this study aims to elucidate the relationship between EI and cognition in this population, and also to investigate the contribution of EI to psychosocial outcome. There is consistent evidence of psychosocial impact of mTBI within the literature, such as the decline in the quality of romantic relationships, the quantity and nature of friendships, and community involvement in general. This is the case despite the heterogeneous definition of the condition among studies. Although many studies report cognitive symptoms in mTBI resolving within 6-months post-injury, unwelcome changes in personality and psychosocial functioning in this population have been reported by patients and their relatives long after the initial injury, across severities. EI has been argued to be a magnifying glass to individual differences, accounting for what cognition cannot in one's emotional and behavioral abilities. The present study investigated the contribution of EI to psychosocial outcome, particularly difficulty maintaining employment, in the years following mTBI. This study did not reveal significant differences in EI between mild TBI and healthy control participants. However, individual analyses revealed significant differences in overall EI and EI factors in select mTBI participants. A significant relationship was found across groups between performance on executive functioning and EI, as well as presenteeism and EI. While this study is limited by small sample size, heterogeneity of the population, and limited assessment, the findings support a relationship between EI and executive functions, as well as job performance. Future studies would benefit from a larger sample size and a nuanced assessment of executive functions, as well as multiple measurements of EI.
