Abstract
Public Health
Background: Due to the efforts of the United States Fire Association, a great amount of national data regarding firefighter injuries and fatalities exist; however little was found specifically for fire departments in the city Philadelphia, PA. It is believed by Local 22 of the International Association of Firefighters Union (Local 22) representatives that with the exception of the events of 9/11, Philadelphia has had the most fire fighters killed on duty in the country with at least one firefighter dying in the line of duty every year. This past year and a half a total of three firefighters have been lost in the line of duty. In 2011, Local 22 made a decision to begin formally collecting data from fire and injury reports submitted to their office. Analysis of this data will further Local 22's knowledge on how their paramedics and firefighters are injured during ground operations. Methods: Retrospective analysis was conducted on total injuries of fire fighters and paramedics (n=512). Gender, age, marriage, division, and occupation were used to compare total injuries by a Poisson statistical model. Descriptive analysis was conducted on civilian injuries (n= 822) and fires incidences (n=990). Results: Univariate models for member injuries did not indicate significant findings. Civilian and Member injuries followed similar trends by zip code. Fires did not trend the same way as injuries by zip code. Conclusions: Recommendations include: continued community outreach for fire prevention measures, further analysis on areas with ladder-only stations as it relates to civilian and member fire injuries.
