Abstract
This study identified the major impediments to participating in music that adults face outside of the higher education setting. Results of an anonymous survey (N=199) conducted in June and July of 2011 showed that the biggest barrier to participation was a lack of time. Lack of time was predominantly due to career-related demands, and secondarily due to family-related demands. Other findings indicate: adults lack a network of musicians and venue to practice or perform; their motivations to continue practicing music were mostly self-centered; and that some struggle with feelings of inadequacy due to previous negative experiences in music. Community music groups may use the findings of this study to create strategies for marketing and programming that address these barriers for their current and prospective members, in order to gain and retain more adult musicians in their programs.
