Abstract
When accompanied by clear communication and the right leadership, a merger can afford a college with administrative, economic, and academic benefits. In the absence of ample time and consideration, a merger can harm stakeholders' morale and organizational commitment. This paper aims to determine how higher education institutions' financial needs can impact the importance of selecting a compatible merger partner. The following thesis provides an in-depth discussion of the controversial merger between Watkins College of Art and Belmont University. Through interviews with Belmont and Watkins' students, this case study analyzes how the handling of the Watkins-Belmont merger impacted the colleges' main stakeholder group. Suggestions for future mergers emphasize the importance of mitigating misinformation by way of redundant and transparent communication, ample planning, and willing leadership.
