Mobilizing Memory to Movement: Community Engagement at Sites of Conscience

Abstract
This qualitative study explores non-profit organizations that are members of the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience (ICSC) and investigates how their program models and community engagement activities are impacted by their membership and involvement in the ICSC. In pursuit of this research, the project engages with working field professionals who are employed by member organizations of the ICSC and have the knowledge and skills to speak to their organizations' programming philosophies, community outreach methods and interpretation models. This project includes a series of case studies featuring four different ICSC member organizations: Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site, The Tenement Museum, The Whitney Plantation and the Museum of Tolerance. Additionally, the project features an interview with a representative from the ICSC, lending insight from the perspective of a Coalition staff member. These interviews gathered information about the member organizations' philosophies, considerations, and their successes and challenges within programming and interpretation, while illuminating the relationships between the ICSC and its member organizations as well as the member sites' connections to each other. Overall, the ICSC and its member organizations are all unique and individual institutions with varying thematic topics and resources, however it is clear that these organizations share commonalities due to their relationship with the ICSC. The aim of this research is to gain insight into how organizations representing sites of remembrance connect with their communities, and to explore what it means to be a member of the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience.
