Modifying reactions to dietary lapses: comparing self-compassion and self-accountability interventions

Abstract
A deterrent to optimal weight loss outcomes in reduced-calorie-based programs is the occurrence of dietary lapses (i.e., instances of non-adherence to a dietary prescription), which lead to increased caloric intake and can result in abandonment of weight loss efforts. Cognitions and affect experienced in response to lapses impact the likelihood of future lapses, though conclusions about which are effective at reducing the risk of relapse are mixed. The current study aimed to compare a self-accountability and a self-compassion condition for their feasibility and acceptability, efficacy at changing cognitions, affect, and cognitive-affective reactions to dietary lapses, and effectiveness of reducing dietary lapses and weight over time. Both interventions were moderately feasible and acceptable, produced increases in internal causal attribution and decreases in control, and produced a decrease in lapses from pre-intervention to follow-up. Self-compassion participants experienced increased self-compassion from baseline to final assessment, as well as self-forgiveness and responsibility in response to lapses. Self-accountability participants demonstrated decreases in self-forgiveness in response to lapses. Steeper declines in lapses were observed following the self-accountability intervention, but greater weight loss occurred as a result of the self-compassion intervention. Additional research is required to further distinguish the most effective elements of each intervention.
