Abstract

Inpatient Polyvagal
This critical literature review explores the intersections of inpatient psychiatric restraint, polyvagal theory, dance/movement therapy and counseling, physiological manifestations of trauma, and somatic countertransference. Through the literature, this review illustrates the history of inpatient psychiatric care, manifestations of stress in the body in relation to traumatic events, and the hierarchical dynamic established through the administration and removal of power in restraints. In addition, the need for an embodied approach to support individuals in returning to a place of emotional and physiological safety post restraint is detailed. The review closes with clinical recommendations, limitations, and personal takeaways.
