Abstract
This critical review of the literature investigates the intersection of literature on dance/movement therapy (DMT), theories of grief and loss, and how culture impacts bereavement, with specific attention towards grief experienced by adults mourning suicide. This literature review explores available clinical and anthropological literature on cultural expressions of grief and mourning with the intention of supporting the use of DMT in clinical practice with suicidally bereaved adults, and advocating for exploratory research to provide an evidence base for recommending DMT with this population. The result of this literature review highlight gaps in the literature regarding a lack of cultural perspectives and representation, variety of language and a lack of universally defined constructs, and the lack of an integrative approach when providing clinical interventions supporting suicidally bereaved adults. I explore implications and propose future directions for dance/movement therapists developing research and clinical interventions. Finally, I reflect on how exploring the literature has impacted my growth as a person and a dance/movement therapist.
