Abstract
The purpose of this capstone study is to review the literature in regards to how improvisational music therapy addressed a client's unconscious and the elements of the shadow. The Jungian shadow archetype and relevant concepts will be reviewed and integrated into clinical improvisation. This capstone study will review nine case studies in order to demonstrate how music therapists found manifestations of elements of the shadow archetype in musical improvisations. The anticipated outcome of this capstone project is to derive clinical implications by using the technique of improvised music, to explore the elements of the shadow, and to inspire others to continue exploring these concepts and ideas.
