Abstract

Sexual minority youth Parents of sexual minority youth
LGBTQ+ young people and their families experience unique challenges in forming and maintaining supportive familial relationships. Research shows that caregiver reactions to their LGBTQ+ children directly impacts current and future mental health risks. Clinicians thus have the responsibility to support families in building relationships that serve as a protective factor for the adolescent's mental health. Using music therapy to work with this population presents opportunities for improved self-expression, communication, and social skills. In this paper, the author presents research supporting the need for further education for clinicians to work with this community and proposes a workshop to provide this training. The 3-hour workshop will educate practitioners about their own biases, identify appropriate language to use with LGBTQ+ clients, and explore multiple intervention ideas to use with the population. In creating this workshop, considerations included relevant music and family therapy literature, and best practices for working with LGBTQ+ young people with mental health challenges. This paper provides a reflective, in-depth exploration of the creation of a training to equip music therapists to work with LGBTQ+ young people and their families.
