Abstract

Music therapy Rural mental health services
Rural communities are faced with decreased employment opportunities and rates of mental illness that are comparable, or even greater than, their urban counterparts. This includes depression, substance use, and suicidality, often exacerbated by stoicism, stigma, and distrust within rural culture. Despite these known struggles, there remains a lack of access to mental health resources in rural America. With a shortage of mental health professionals in these communities, clinicians may develop burnout trying to service the needs of their clientele. When taking rural culture into account, there may also be a need for clinicians to battle ethical conundrums relating to dual-relationships and confidentiality while practicing in small towns. To explore some opportunities that may be present in these communities, including home-based services and community music therapy, this writer created a mock case conceptualization and music therapy interventions based on an individual discussed in a popular memoir by J. D. Vance, Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis. This mock case conceptualization unearthed themes of resiliency and strength in these communities, with a strong sense of dedication, hard work, and a devotion to family.
