Abstract
As music therapy begins to expand into new clinical and non-clinical settings, there still exists a need for a method connecting the therapeutic use of music in a dental setting. This paper describes the development and implementation of a method involving the use of music therapy during dental procedures to support the reduction of dental anxiety. This method was developed by the author and carried out during a two-month period at the author's internship site. It consists of four steps, though, due to time constraints, not all steps were consistently carried out in the clinical setting. Clinical vignettes will be presented to help illustrate the method. The goals this method is intended to address as exemplified in the vignettes are a.) to create a positive dental environment, b.) increased endurance of dental procedures, and c.) decreased avoidant behaviors exhibited by patients with dental anxiety. Through a discussion of outcomes, limitations, and benefits, the author suggests implications for future practice.
