Abstract

Juvenile detention homes--Psychological aspects Juvenile detention homes--Law and legislation Psychology
The staggering number of youth who reside in residential juvenile justice facilities, along with federal, state, and local initiatives to improve the treatment and outcomes for these youth prompt the need for additional research with juvenile justice facilities. However, researchers encounter numerous obstacles when considering, designing, and conducting research with detention and post-adjudication juvenile justice facilities. These obstacles are often only briefly mentioned in publications, and they can impede research protocols to such an extent that studies do not even begin or are prematurely terminated. This study examined potential obstacles to research with residential juvenile justice facilities; obstacles included: selecting and accessing appropriate facilities, obtaining IRB approval, obtaining parental/guardian permission, obtaining youth assent, reporting child abuse or neglect, managing danger to self or others, working within facility policies, coordinating with facilities, working with facility staff, and system-related attrition. This study surveyed 51 researchers in the field of juvenile justice to systematically review the obstacles that researchers encounter when working with juvenile justice facilities and how the obstacles impact the ability to execute research protocols. Data are presented that describe the extent to which obstacles are faced and the ways in which they impact the execution of research. Qualitative information on solutions that have been reached for the obstacles also is presented. Results suggest that few researchers work with residential juvenile justice facilities; however, they also provide information that may facilitate additional research in these settings.
