Abstract

Arts--Management Musicians Communities of practice Transgender musicians Women musicians Equality
Philadelphia is a city with rich artistic and historical significance that is an attractive hub due to its diversity. However, musicians in Philadelphia are experiencing distaste for the current status quo. Tours continue to be announced without participation from women, non-binary people, and transgender people. All white male groups seem to be the face of music, but bands coming from Philadelphia are increasingly diverse. Ten Philadelphia based musicians were interviewed to assess the climate of Philadelphia's independent music scene with a focus on gender diversity and inclusion. This essay provides a qualitative analysis of what musicians are doing to foster gender diversity in their community. This study also provides recommendations for creating more inclusive music communities and future research based on both the primary research and current literature. This study found that while the Philadelphia independent music scene appears to be moving more diligently toward gender equity than other thriving music scenes, there is still homogeneity, divisiveness within the community and a pointed concern for a more intersectional understanding of diversity and inclusion.
