Abstract
Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (United States) Medicine, Preventive Rural Areas Impact Assessment Public Health
Preventive care is significantly underutilized in the United States health care system. Disparities in health care are especially prevalent in rural communities. The recently passed Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) seeks to address these problems with several of its provisions, but it is unknown exactly how well these measures can be expected to bridge the gap. This project provides a review of the literature delineating the current state of preventive care in the United States and in rural populations in particular. The PPACA provisions associated with preventive services and rural health are explored, and their potential impact and limitations are analyzed. Finally, recommendations are made for further addressing health care disparities in such populations in the future.
