Abstract

Dance/movement therapy Latinx people Culturally informed therapy Trauma work Trauma support Domestic Violence
Dance/movement therapy has shown to be an effective tool in trauma work. Merging research from DMT with psychology resources on domestic violence support and the Latinx population, this culminating project aims to initiate connections between DMT work and DV support for the Latinx community. Recognizing and integrating clients' cultural backgrounds and practices served as a crucial pillar in this project. Some of the cultural markers explored included familismo, cariño, respeto, ancestros, dichos, lealtad, simpatia, and ritmos. This project is a hybrid between an Informed-Practice Application and Approach and a Public Talk in a community setting. The methods involved information gathering and conducting a workshop about the benefits of DMT at a non-profit agency to Latinx identifying DV counselors who support Latinx DV survivors. The process also involved engaging DV counselors to participate in the interventions designed for a DV curriculum that already existed at the site. The DV counselors collaborated by offering culturally-informed and trauma-informed feedback to the DMT components of each session. The information was synthesized into a DMT interventions addendum to be added to the DV support curriculum. Common DMT goals that overlapped with DV support goals included increasing self-esteem, reducing immobility, re-integrating body splits, establishing boundaries, improving well-being, addressing tension, experiencing unity, strengthening empowerment, and connecting with joy.
