Abstract
In the United States, youth and violence is multifaceted. There are many risk-factors, causes and outcomes of youth in urban settings who have been exposed to violence during their lives. This literature based study will examine the effects of youth and violence and the role of music's impact on reducing these effects through several works in: creative arts therapies, mental health, education and community programs. In particular, this study will investigate the use of music and music therapy in helping youth cope with the aftermath of violence. A matrix method, developed by Judith Garrard (1999) was used to compile and organize the data into coherent categories by comparatively analyzing the literature. Integration of the literature was found in supporting a conflict resolution model. A description of the literature and its implications in reducing youth's symptoms related to violence is summed up.
