Abstract
This project aimed to reduce time for Neurologic consultation of stroke patients in the Emergency Department. The use of Telemedicine and Specialists on call (SOC) allow for prompt evaluation of stroke patients. The timeliness of the telemedicine request and initiation of the stroke process expedites treatments and allows for prompt intervention of acute stroke. Reducing time for evaluation of stroke patients is proven beneficial for improving health outcomes in patients. The use of a stroke process ensures adherence to up-to-date stroke guidelines as well as promotes consistent training for care of these patients. This project is a way to improve community health, educate regarding stroke, and decrease the overall burden on the healthcare system regarding lifetime costs surrounding stroke. The long-term costs of stroke are devastating with not only medical costs but also lost productivity, with a reported cost of $46 billion in costs for one year. The use of Telemedicine for stroke has proven beneficial and effective to providing quality care and maximize resources for many community hospitals.
