Role of music and emotional expression in Chinese culture: cultural considerations when using psychodynamic music therapy with clients from Chinese culture

Abstract
This capstone project was to explore the role of music, emotion, and understanding of self-expression that is unique to Chinese culture, and how these elements intersect with psychodynamic music therapy which originated from Western culture. A critical analysis of the literature was conducted to examine the elements stated above. The article was written through a culturally reflexive lens, aiming to find the intersection between elements, in order to bring cultural understandings about clients with a Chinese origin to the field of music therapy. Articles in the following areas: 1) cultural awareness and cultural competemility model in the field of health profession, 2) music psychotherapy as related to Western values, 3) comparison of the differences in emotion and expression between individualistic and collectivistic societies, 4) background of Chinese philosophy around emotional expressions and collectivist principles, 5) the role of music in Chinese society, and 6) emotional expression in Chinese pop songs will be reviewed for this capstone project. The overarching goal of this exploration was to help music therapists improve their cultural competency and build a better therapeutic relationship when encounter Chinese clients.
