Strategies Implemented to Encourage Diversity, Equity and Inclusion within the Arts and Cultural Workforce of New York City

Abstract
The absence of diversity within the arts and cultural workforce in New York City has been identified as a serious problem. Studies conducted by the City of New York on the sector's demographics, concluded that the arts and cultural workforce does not reflect the demographics of the city's population. In response to this and the Department of Cultural Affairs' call to action, arts organizations across New York City developed plans with the intent of improving the sector's demographic makeup. For my thesis, I wanted to learn what strategies these organizations had chosen to implement and why. I looked at a select group of performing arts and presenting organizations that receive specific support for the Department of Cultural Affairs. The organizations spanned different boroughs and varied in size and resources but were all responsible for developing their own plans to address diversity, equity and inclusion. I reviewed each organization's plans, conducted interviews; discovering themes within the individual issues they identified and the strategies they developed. I also found variances among their plans, that reflected their size and financial resources.
